Sweden eases past Mexico
With a 3-0 victory over Mexico, Sweden secured the top spot in Group F last week. While Mexico had 65 percent of the possession, Sweden bottled the opposition up with only three of 19 shots being on goal. Sweden fired 13 shots with five on goal. Ludwig Augustinsson put Sweden on the board in the 50th minute, while Andreas Granqvist added a penalty kick goal in the 62nd minute. An own goal charged to Edson Alvarez added an insurance goal in the 74th minute. Sweden was whistled for 11 fouls including two yellow cards, while it manufactured three corner kicks.
Switzerland unable to hold on
After taking the lead in the 88th minute on a goal by Josip Drmic, Switzerland proceeded to allow a goal a few minutes later to fall into a 2-2 draw. Even so, the Swiss managed to qualify out of Group E with its 1-0-2 record. Blerim Dzemaili gave Switzerland a 1-0 advantage in the 31st minute, but Costa Rica managed to tie it in the 56th minute which is how it would stand until the late thrill ride. Switzerland held 60 percent of the possession, but was outshot 14-12. The Swiss put three shots on goal, while Switzerland had six on goal. Switzerland was called for nine fouls, but three were yellow cards. Additionally, the Swiss found their way to six corner kicks.
Prediction:
This is a tough one to decide and I’m going to say it isn’t decided through regulation. These two teams don’t have a lot of areas where you can point to being far superior than their opponent, rather there is simply a lot of evenness in this matchup in all position groups. I’m going to say this one moves to extra time and quite possibly penalty kicks.
