Danzing Candy Kentucky Derby Preview
Danzing Candy pulled off an upset at the San Felipe Stakes but can he do it again on Saturday when he runs in the Kentucky Derby?
The Odds: According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, Danzing Candy is 17/1 to win at Churchill Downs this weekend. Nyquist remains the favorite at 2/1, while Mohaymen is 9/2 and both Exaggerator and Gun Runner are 13/2, respectively. Mor Spirit, meanwhile, has 15/2 odds.
A Snapshot: Owned by Halo Farms, Bashor, and Jim and Dianne Bashor, Danzing Candy has three wins, zero second-place showings and no third-place finishes in five starts. He’s earned $358,650 in his career ($71,730) and his dam, Talkin and Singing, is a half-sister to 2004 John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now. A pacesetter in terms of running style, Danzing Candy’s jockey for Saturday is Mike Smith.

Why Bet Danzing Candy: Because when he won by two lengths in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, he beat Mor Spirit, who has 15/2 odds to win on Saturday. The problem is Danzing Candy was a dud in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby when racing on a sloppy track for the first time. He finished fourth to Exaggerator, the aforementioned Mor Spirit, and Uncle Lino. That said, if the track on Saturday isn’t sloppy, then Danzing Candy will be overlooked because of his poor showing in the Santa Anita Derby. He’s more talented than his 20/1 odds suggest, so at the very least he represents great value for exacta and trifecta bettors.
