Awesome Act Update
Grade 3 winner Awesome Act could emerge as one of the sleepers to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby, which takes place on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Recent History:
Awesome Act finished third at the G1 Wood Memorial on April 3 behind 2010 Kentucky Derby contender Jackson Bend and former favorite Eskendereya, who was has been scratched for Saturday’s race due to an injury. Awesome Act claimed his first and only victory of the year at the G3 Gotham on March 6.
When the post positions were released on Wednesday of this week, Awesome Act was 10/1 to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby. According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, Awesome Act remains 10/1 to win at Churchill Downs this Saturday.
Awesome Act will start out of the No. 16 post position, which has produced three Kentucky Derby winners since 1900.
Outlook:
Awesome Act is one of the few contenders that suited to run in the long-distance Kentucky Derby. He has shown the ability to rally and has experience running on dirt tracks after largely being a turf runner earlier in his career. What’s impressive about his third place finish at Gotham behind Eskendereya is that he stumbled out of the starting gate and yet still finished in the money. He likes to rally from off the pace, which is perfect for racing in the Kentucky Derby, although he must overcome the fact that he’s only raced twice this season.
