Brendan Shanahan sure doesn’t mess around in overtime.
For the second time in three weeks, Shanahan scored early in the extra session, this one capping a 4-3 comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday night to extend the New York Rangers’ winning streak to three games.
Shanahan was sprung on a breakaway by Chris Drury. He skated straight down on Montreal goalie Cristobal Huet and sent a 15-foot wrist shot over his left shoulder 1:06 into the extra period.
“There was a turnover at the blue line, and I moved up,” Shanahan said. “I thought it was going to be a 2-on-1, but I didn’t see anyone between me and the net. Drury just laid it over for me, and I walked into it.”
Shanahan also had the game-winner on Dec. 9 against the New Jersey Devils, ripping a shot past Martin Brodeur 30 seconds into overtime to break a scoreless tie.
“Overtime goals are always fun and exciting,” Shanahan said.
In other NHL games Sunday, it was Los Angeles 3, Chicago 2 in overtime; Vancouver 2, Anaheim 1; and Philadelphia 1, Florida 0.
Dan Girardi, who assisted on Shanahan’s goal, and Jaromir Jagr also scored for the Rangers, who got 18 saves from Henrik Lundqvist.
Andrei Kastsitsyn scored two power play goals for Montreal, and linemate Tomas Plekanec also scored. Huet wound up with 17 saves as Montreal closed out a six-game road trip at 3-2-1.
“We were there right to the end,” Montreal coach Guy Carbonneau said. “We had chances to put it away when it was 3-2, and we couldn’t do it. It was a lot of young guys against an experienced team. I thought we played probably one of our best games this year.”
Girardi put the Rangers up 1-0 just past the halfway point of the first period on an assist from Scott Gomez, who extended his point-scoring streak to a dozen games.
Kastsitsyn tied the game at 18:03 on a power play, but the Rangers went back in front 17 seconds later when Jagr took Gomez’s pass and sent a wrist shot from the low slot past Huet.
The Canadiens tied the game at 14:31 of the second with Kastsitsyn finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing play in front with a short blast past Lundqvist on a power play. Montreal took its first lead at 17:07 when Plekanec scored on a one-timer from the right circle.
Drury tied the game with 5:51 left in regulation when he found a loose puck at the top of the crease and flipped it over a prone Huet.
“I didn’t see the shot, but I saw it go at the net,” Drury said. “The whole game felt like a playoff game, how the crowd was during the anthems and all. It was exciting.”
Kings 3, Blackhawks 2, OT
Dustin Brown scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give visiting Los Angeles its second straight win after an eight-game losing streak.
Brown and Kyle Calder connected in the third period to rally the Kings from a 2-0 deficit and force overtime, where Brown beat Chicago goalie Nikolai Khabibulin with a low shot at 3:31.
Rookies Jonathan Toews and Jacob Dowell scored in regulation for the Blackhawks, who played before a season-high United Center crowd of 21,715 – their largest since Dec. 27, 2001.
Canucks 2, Ducks 1
Daniel Sedin and Matt Cooke each scored to help Vancouver beat struggling Anaheim, which has lost two of its last three on a trip through Canada.
With George Parros and Neil O’Donnell in the box for consecutive interference penalties, Henrik Sedin found Daniel Sedin in open ice for his team-leading 17th goal of the season.
Vancouver took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the second period when Cooke finished off a 3-on-2 rush with a wrist shot from 25 feet.
Flyers 1, Panthers 0
At Sunrise, Fla., Derian Hatcher scored midway through the third period and Antero Niittymaki stopped 38 shots, helping Philadelphia to its third straight victory.
It was the third career shutout and first of the season for Niittymaki. Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun matched him into the third period, when the Flyers’ Stefan Ruzicka fired a wrist shot from the left circle. The puck deflected to Hatcher, who fired the go-ahead goal at 9:14.
It was Hatcher’s second of the season and 80th in 1,022 career games.
