Bernier signs two-year deal with Leafs
LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – Jonathan Bernier and the long-shot Maple Leafs have agreed on a two-year deal.
Bernier and Toronto went to arbitration with Bernier asking for $5.1 million and the Leafs countering with $2.89 million. The two sides eventually agreed on a two-year contract worth $8.3 million and Bernier will have an AAV of $4.15 million over those two years.
“The thought process is trying to get a goaltender, and hopefully it’s Jonathan, to be the stabilizer for this franchise,” general manager Lou Lamoriello said on a conference call (via CBC.ca). “Having that one (extra) year is both good for Jonathan and the organization, whether it’s the organization evaluating or whether it’s Jonathan proving.”
According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, the Maple Leafs are massive 200/1 long shots to win the 2016 Stanley Cup. Along with the Arizona Coyotes, those are currently the worst odds in the NHL.
