Canes Season Odds
The Carolina Hurricanes will once again lean on their offense to try and make a deep postseason run this year. Oddsmakers have established the Caps’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 33/1.
In effort to try and fix the defense, general manager Jim Rutherford went out and traded forward Erik Cole for defensemen Joni Pitkanen, as well as added Josef Melichar and Anton Babchuk, who returns from playing in Russia. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not the moves pay off, because the Canes really struggled defensively last season.
One thing the club didn’t struggle in, however, is offense. Eric Staal led the team with 38 goals and 44 assists and as a team, Carolina scored 252 goals, which was the fifth best in the league. The Canes’ offense is rivaled by only the Washington Capitals in the Southeast Division.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have listed the Hurricanes’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 30/1. Bodog has Carolina at 33/1, while Sportsbook.com gives the Canes a 40/1 shot.
The Hurricanes are going to push the Capitals in the division, and could make a run at the Cup provided their defense improves. The additions that the club made in that category over the offseason should help and hopefully will make stopper Cam Ward’s job significantly easier. The offense is going to score points and Ward had a solid .904 save percentage last year, so if the defense can rise to the challenge, the Canes are going to be around at the end of the season.
