Over the years, the New Jersey Devils have been a consistent playoff team despite their limitations. Can this be the year they contend for the Cup?

The Devils added Jacques Lemaire, Rob Niedermayer, Yann Danis, Ben Walter, Andrew Peters and Cory Murphy in the offseason. They lost Brent Sutter, Brian Gionta, John Madden, Bobby Holik, Scott Clemmensen, Michael Rupp, Barry Tallackson, Kevin Weekes, Niclas Gavelid and Brendan Shanahan from last year’s squad.

Zach Parise is once again set to lead the Devils this season. With the loss of Gionta and a groin injury affecting Patrik Elias’ season, Parise will be counted on heavily this year for New Jersey.

The Devils continue to surprise their critics, but they suffered a couple of key losses in the offseason that will hurt their Stanley Cup chances. The key for NJ this year will be whether or not 37-year old Martin Brodeur can hold up between the pipes. Outside of a playoff meltdown against Carolina last year, he was outstanding and if his production doesn’t slip, the Devils could surprise again this year.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the Devils 25/1 to win the 2010 Stanley Cup and 13/1 to win the Eastern Conference.
