The defending Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings had quite a year, finishing 51-21. But they fell five points shy of the Sharks (who finished 53-18 for 117 points), who will be the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference this postseason.

Oddsmakers have established Detroit and San Jose’s odds at 7/2 to win the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals. The Wings will start off with the No. 7-seeded Columbus Blue Jackets in the playoffs, while the Sharks are set to do battle with the No. 8-seeded Anaheim Ducks.

The No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference belongs to the Boston Bruins, who oddsmakers have given 11/2 odds to win the Stanley Cup this season. The Bruins will take on the No. 8-seeded Montreal Canadiens, who are 45/1 long shots. The Washington Capitals, who are the second seed in the East, are 10/1 long shots to win the Cup this season while the No. 3-seeded New Jersey Devils are 7/1.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, who were beaten by the Red Wings in the Finals last year, are 9/1 long shots as No. 4 seeds in the Eastern Conference. For complete odds on all the teams in the postseason this year, see below.
