Thrashers Season Odds
Will the moves that the Atlanta Thrashers made in the offseason help the club succeed in 2008? Oddsmakers have established the Thrashers’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 100/1.
Atlanta allowed a league-high 266 goals in 2008, so general manager Don Waddell went out and signed ex-Blue Jackets defensemen Ron Hainsey to a five-year, $22.5 million contract. Waddell will hopefully give goaltenders Kari Lehtonen and Ondrej Pavelec a break.
Even with the addition of Waddell, however, new head coach John Anderson has his work cut out for him. The hope is that draftee Zach Bogosian could develop immediately and pair up with Waddell to form a solid defensive combo, although it might take time for the youngster to learn the ropes. Still, he gives the Thrashers hope for the future.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have listed the Thrashers’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 95/1. Bodog has Atlanta at 100/1, while Sportsbook.com gives the Thrashers a 100/1 shot.
The bottom line is that the Thrashers will have to overachieve to make a run in 2008. They have the weakest defense and special teams in the division and the offense doesn’t offer a lot of promise this year either. But one thing Atlanta does offer is a decent goaltending situation and Anderson is an above average coach. A lot will have to happen for this team to turn things around this year, but the Thrashers still could surprise in 2008-09.
