The Hurricanes are favored to knock off the Capitals on Monday night but they’ve had issues with Washington in previous meetings between the two teams. Are the Capitals a great play as a home dog?

Antti Raanta stopped 30-of-32 shots in Saturday’s 7-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. Raanta let in goals by Pavel Buchnevich in the second and third periods, but Carolina held a multi-goal lead at both points in the game and the netminder otherwise did a nice job of shutting down the Blues. The veteran goalie has been feeling it of late, having now yielded two or fewer goals in five of his last six starts. Showing next on the schedule for the Hurricanes, a Monday matchup with the Capitals.

Nicklas Backstrom scored a goal and assisted on another in Saturday’s 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils. Backstrom came through twice when it mattered most on Saturday, first scoring a go-ahead goal against Nico Daws about seven minutes into the third period and second adding an assist on Alex Ovechkin’s insurance goal a few minutes thereafter. For the campaign as a whole, now, Backstrom has tallied six goals and 26 points across 34 games played. He has missed time with both hip and illness concerns this season, hence the curtailed number of games played.
