New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson says he's proud of former Missouri roommate Michael Sam for revealing publicly that he's gay, and adds there's ''most definitely'' a place for him in an NFL locker room.
Richardson, the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, says in an interview Tuesday with New York's SNY cable network that Sam never came out to him, but ''you knew, you saw him.'' Richardson adds that he didn't care about Sam's sexuality, saying ''he was my guy, my homeboy.''
Sam revealed to his teammates he was gay at one of the team's dinners last summer - after Richardson had been drafted by the Jets. On Sunday, Sam came out publicly in published interviews and could become the first openly homosexual player in the NFL.
