For the third time in as many years, the Kansas City Chiefs are heading to the Super Bowl. For the second time in the last three years, the Chiefs will square off against the Eagles. Super Bowl LIX Opening Odds

The Chiefs opened as 1.5-point favorites in the Super Bowl, while the total hit the board at 48.5. The over/under, however, has moved a full point up to 49.5 at most sportsbooks. While the point spread was also 1.5 in favor of Kansas City when the lookahead lines were released last week, the total was 45.5. Thus, interesting to note that the total has moved significantly from where the lookahead line was last week.

Underdogs have performed well in the Super Bowl in recent years, covering in 16 out of the last 24 NFL title games. The team that has won the game also covered the spread in nine of the last 10 Super Bowls. That same trend has held up over the last 20 years. The team that won the game also covered the number in 17 out of the last 20 Super Bowls.

The game has gone under in five of the last six Super Bowls and three straight NFL title games have been decided by a field goal.

Last Five Super Bowl Spreads

The small spread is nothing new for Super Bowl lines. The Chiefs were favored by 2.5 in last year’s Super Bowl and were 2-point favorites when they faced the Eagles three years ago. The Rams were 4-point favorites against the Bengals in the 2022 Super Bowl, while Kansas City was a 3-point favorite versus the Tom Brady-led Bucs in 2021.

Finally, the Chiefs were 1.5-point favorites versus the 49ers in 2020.
