NFL Week 6 Betting Recap: Underdogs Thrive on Sunday 10/16/17

NFL Week 6 Betting Recap: Dog Sunday

How did you fare in Week 6 of the NFL season? If you bet mostly underdogs, the answer is you made out incredibly well.

Out of the 13 games played thus far in Week 6, a whopping 11 underdogs covered the spread. Of those 11 underdogs, nine won the game outright. The only favorites that covered were the Texans, who beat the winless Browns 33-17 as a 7.5-point favorite, and the Saints, who thrashed the Lions 52-38 as a 5.5-point favorite, although that game got dicey for New Orleans bettors as Detroit scored 28 points in the second half to come close.

The biggest upsets occurred in Atlanta and Denver, respectively. The Falcons, looking nothing like they did in their run to the Super Bowl last year, have now lost back-to-back games in which they were favored at home against an AFC East opponent not named the Patriots (who, somewhat ironically, they’ll face in New England next Sunday night). The Falcons blew a 17-0 halftime lead to the Dolphins on Sunday and lost 20-17 as a 14-point home favorite. The Broncos, meanwhile, fell behind 10-0 to the winless Giants on Sunday Night Football before falling 23-10 as a 13.5-point home favorite.

Other outright upsets included the Bears knocking off the Ravens 27-24 in overtime as a 5-point road underdog. The Vikings also beat the Packers (the biggest public play of Week 6) 23-10 as a 3-point home underdog following the injury to Aaron Rodgers. The Rams went on the road and beat the Jaguars 27-17 as a 1-point underdog while the Cardinals held on to beat the Buccaneers 38-33 as a 2.5-point home dog.

The other outright underdog upsets occured in Oakland, Kansas City and Carolina, where the Panthers lost 28-23 to the Eagles, who were a 3-point road underdog on Thursday night. The Chargers rallied to clip the Raiders 17-16 as a 3-point road dog while the Steelers upset the previously unbeaten Chiefs 19-13 as a 3.5-point road underdog at Arrowhead Stadium in the late games on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Patriots and Redskins survived while winning as favorites in their respective games, but they failed to cover for bettors. Washington beat San Francisco 26-24 as an 11-point favorite, while New England hung on to beat New York 24-17 as a 9-point road favorite.
