Turnovers concerning for Winston?
TALLAHASSE, FL (The Spread) – Off-field concerns aren’t the only thing that draft evaluators are struggling with when it comes to Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.
Winston won the Heisman Trophy in 2013 and had Florida State competing for another national championship in 2014 but NFL draft evaluator Mike Mayock can’t shake the fact that the former Seminole turned the ball over too much last season.
“I keep going back to the point that he throws too many interceptions, and ball security is the most important thing to me for a quarterback. Off the field, do you trust him or not? There’s still some homework to do on that,” Mayock said.
Mayock remains steadfast that Winston is the top quarterback in this year’s draft class but he believes there’s validity to the idea that teams should put Oregon signal-caller Marcus Mariota ahead of Winston on their draft boards.
“If Marcus Mariota is in the same ballpark, if you’re an NFL franchise, then you take Marcus Mariota because you don’t have any issues off the field,” Mayock said. “If there’s a bigger disparity, then it’s a different answer.”
