Smith breaks jaw, Jets’ odds drop
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (The Spread) – Following the announcement that quarterback Geno Smith will miss the next 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw, the Jets’ 2016 Super Bowl odds have dropped.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, the Jets are 50/1 to win the 2016 Super Bowl and 22/1 to win the AFC Conference Championship this season. But following the news of Smith’s injury, New York’s odds dropped to 70/1 to win the Super Bowl and 35/1 to win the AFC title.
Smith will be sidelined 6-10 weeks after being “sucker punched” by linebacker I.K. Enemkpali in what is being described as a “locker room altercation.” According to ESPN NFL Insider, Enemkpali was attempting to get reimbursed $600 that was given to Smith to attend the linebacker’s football camp in Pflugerville, Texas.
But Smith didn’t show for the camp, which took place days after someone close to the quarterback was killed in a motorcycle accident in Miami. Smith reportedly told Enemkpali that he would reimburse him the money, but had not as of Tuesday morning and the locker room confrontation ended with the quarterback suffering a broken jaw.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is now in line to start under center for the Jets until Smith returns at some point during the regular season.
