According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, the Eagles are 2.5-point favorites over the Packers on Sunday. The over/under total for this game is currently 46 points.
Usually, public bettors favor the favorite in sporting events. But according to current NFL public betting information, 57% of the 35,000-plus wagers placed on Sunday’s game have been placed on the Packers +2.5.
One of the main reasons why the public is behind Green Bay this weekend is because of how these two teams performed the past two weeks. Philadelphia dropped its final two games against the Vikings and Cowboys, although it’s fair to note that Michael Vick didn’t play against Dallas because of a quad injury he suffered against Minnesota.
Meanwhile, the Packers crushed the Giants and hang on to beat the Bears in their final two games to clinch a playoff berth. The public latches onto teams that have performed well over recent weeks and that description fits the Packers. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is also playing at an elite level and Green Bay beat the Eagles 27-20 in Philadelphia in Week 1 of the regular season, so those factors also play into the public’s backing of the Pack.
What will be interesting to watch is whether or not the line moves even more than it already has. The Eagles opened as a 3-point favorite over Green Bay but the line has already dropped to 2.5. If the public hammers the Packers even more, bettors could see the spread drop to 2 or even 1.5 closer to kickoff. (Although at that point, one would think that the action would start evening out again as more people grab Philly at less than a field goal.)
