Week 5 in the NFL proved to be the week of the underdogs, as several teams provided upsets. Here’s a betting recap of how everything broke down in Week 5.
Normally a solid play in sports betting, NFL home dogs continue to have a losing record this year at 11-14 (44%). Home favorites continue to be the best bet in 2009, covering over 57% of the time at 28-21.
Bengals beat Ravens outright as road dogs
The Cincinnati Bengals provided one of the best upsets in Week 6 by knocking off the Baltimore Ravens 17-14 as 9-point road underdogs. Carson Palmer threw for 271 yards while Cedric Benson rushed for 120 yards. Cincinnati’s defense held Joe Flacco to only 186 passing yards and Ray Rice to only 69 yards on the ground. The under 42 hit in this game.
Cowboys beat Chiefs in OT, but fail to cover
The Dallas Cowboys earned a 26-20 victory at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, but failed to cover as 7-point road favorites against the Kansas City Chiefs. Tony Romo threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns, while receiver Miles Austin exploded for 250 receiving yards in the win. The over 46 covered in this matchup.
Broncos produce again for bettors
Those bettors that have had faith in the Denver Broncos this year have been rewarded. The Broncos beat the New England Patriots 20-17 in overtime on Sunday to cover for the fifth time this year. Kyle Orton threw for 330 yards and Brandon Marshall caught a game-tying touchdown as Denver covered as a 3-point home dog. The under 41 covered in this outing.
Falcons rout 49ers, cover as road dogs
Fresh off their bye week, the Atlanta Falcons crushed the San Francisco 49ers 45-10 on Sunday. Matt Ryan shredded the Niners’ defense for 329 yards while Roddy White produced 210 receiving yards. The Falcons covered as 3-point road underdogs, while the Over 40 covered easily.
