The Chiefs started last season 1-5, but ended up winning their last 10 games of the regular season. This year’s team should be able to build off that strong finish, as they return all the core pieces. Alex Smith proved to be a solid game manager for the Chiefs last season by throwing for 3,486 yards and 20 touchdowns. Though he is expected to be without Jamaal Charles on Sunday, he has a suitable backup in Spencer Ware. The Chiefs also have a great defense, which allowed the seventh fewest yards in the league in 2015.
The Chargers didn’t have much to be excited about in 2015, as they went just 4-12. This year’s team has many of the same questions that they had a year ago. The big issue for San Diego was their lack of a run game. They ranked 31st in the NFL in rushing at just 84.9 yards per game. While Melvin Gordon is back to improve on a lackluster rookie year, it’s unclear that the Chargers will be able to open up holes for him. If they can’t, that continues to put all the pressure on Philip Rivers. Rivers is a great QB, but facing a tough defense that won’t allow one man to beat him.

San Diego could be better this season, but this is a tough opener. The Chiefs really found a stride at the end of last season and they won’t allow San Diego to come into their stadium and throw the ball around at will. Look for them to easily stop the run and then defend the pass and create turnovers, setting up short fields for Alex Smith and company. Kansas City can win this game by more than a touchdown.
