The Panthers are coming off an NFC Championship and a 17-2 overall record where they went an impressive 13-6 against the spread. Cam Newton had an MVP season last year, throwing for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns while rushing for 636 yards and 10 more scores. He led an offense that didn’t have Kelvin Benjamin all season, as he suffered a preseason knee injury. Now, Benjamin is in the mix and should make Carolina even more dangerous. Carolina also had a lethal defense that ranked sixth in the NFL in 2015. The Panthers had 44 sacks and forced 39 turnovers last year. However, the unit cut ties with Pro Bowl CB Josh Norman, who had 18 pass deflections and four interceptions last season. His absence could be felt in the secondary.
The Broncos won the Super Bowl last season, going 15-4 overall with a 10-8-1 mark against the spread. Like Carolina, Denver had a tremendous defense. The Broncos allowed the fewest yards in the league, allowing just 283.1 yards and 18.5 points per contest. Denver had 52 sacks with 27 turnovers. Von Miller won the Super Bowl MVP and got a new contract after amassing 11 sacks in 2015. Entering this season, Denver has big questions on offense. Peyton Manning retired and that leaves Trevor Siemian as the new starter. He bested rookie Paxton Lynch and veteran Mark Sanchez in the preseason. The second-year QB from Northwestern hasn’t thrown a single pass in a NFL regular season game. Siemian still has great receivers in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, but it is a wonder if he can get them the ball. His first NFL start is against a great defense, so it could be ugly.
