According to oddsmakers, the Lions are 3-point home favorites against the Giants while the total sits at 39.5 points after opening at 37. As of this writing, 62% of betting tickets are on the Lions to cover the spread.
New York Giants
Saquon Barkley (hamstring) did not practice Thursday. As has been the case since he tweaked his hamstring on Monday, Barkley looked fine during warmups, but he was held out of most the action. The Giants are seemingly just being cautious with their No. 2 pick, and Barkley said he would be able to play if there was a real game this weekend. It would be a surprise if he played on Friday night, but he should be 100 percent well before Week 1.
Lions RB Kerryon Johnson finished with seven carries for 34 yards and four catches for 33 yards in Friday's preseason opener versus the Raiders. Johnson was far and away the most impressive offensive player on the field for Detroit as the Lions played him for 40 snaps in his preseason debut. He began the game as Detroit's third-down back behind LeGarrette Blount but shouldered the load for a majority of the second half. Johnson exploded upfield for a 57-yard run that was negated for holding and even flashed versatility at one point when he was stuck behind the line of scrimmage but performed a Barry Sanders-like juke and spin to prevent loss of yards.
The Giants are just 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games versus NFC opponents.
The Lions are 4-1-1 against the number in their last six games versus NFC opponents.
The Giants will likely play without Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. With that amount of firepower on the bench, I don’t like the Giants to score enough to help push the score over the total.
NFL Preseason Prediction: Giants/Lions under 39.5
