The Patriots acquired Cooks and a 2017 four-round pick back on March 10. The team parted with their 2017 first-round pick, as well as their 2017 third-round pick. Rumors started to circulate days prior that the Patriots had a deal in place with the Saints that would have sent cornerback Malcolm Butler to New Orleans in exchange for Cooks, but a deal couldn't be reached. That's when the teams settled on draft picks as compensation.

Cooks is coming off his second straight 1,000-yard season and gives New England yet another weapon to go along with Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell. The defending champion Patriots now have a vertical threat to go along with their spread-heavy offense.

The Patriots have also been one of the most active teams in free agency. Not only did they acquire Cooks, but they also traded for former Colts tight end Dwayne Allen to replace Martellus Bennett, who signed with the Packers, as well as added top corner Stephon Gilmore (Bills). The team also retained linebacker Dont'a Hightower, Alan Branch and Duron Harmon.
