Vegas Taking Massive Bets on Eagles
Las Vegas sportsbooks have been taking multimillion dollar bets on the Eagles to not only cover the Super Bowl LII point spread, but to flat out beat the Patriots this Sunday.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Patriots are currently 4.5-point favorites to beat the Eagles in Super Bowl LII. New England opened as high as a 6-point favorite at most sportsbooks but the number was bet down to 5.5 and then 5 within the first 42 hours it was posted. Now that most sportsbooks in Vegas are taking massive wagers on Philadelphia, the spread could go down again before the 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Sunday.
Ben Fawkes of ESPN's "Chalk" tweeted on Monday night that the MGM Mirage in Las Vegas took a multimillion dollar bet on the Eagles to win outright. William Hill also took a $1 million wager on Philly moneyline while the Wynn took a "high six figures" bet on the Eagles moneyline. CG Technology also took a 700K wager on the Eagles to win and South Point took a 500K wager on Philly money line according to Fawkes.
According to Fawkes' cohort at ESPN.com, David Purdum, the same unnamed bettor who took Las Vegas for millions on the World Series bet on the underdog Eagles for big bucks. That was the $1 million wager at William Hill U.S. The wager would reportedly net $1.65 million if the Eagles were to pull off the upset.
While the money exchanged likely isn't as high as in Vegas, online sportsbooks are seeing money on Philadelphia as well. As of Tuesday morning, 57% of the betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the Eagles to cover the 4.5-point spread. With money continuing to come in on Philly, it'll be interesting to see how far sportsbooks drop the Patriots without fear of being "middled" by sharp bettors.
