MIAMI (AP) -Kenny Cattouse ran for 205 yards on 14 carries and one touchdown as Troy came up just short of 300 yards rushing but cruised to a 34-16 victory over Florida International Saturday.
Troy finished with 299 yards rushing as a team, and Cattouse scored on an 88-yard touchdown run with 3:08 left in the third quarter to give the Trojans (4-2, 3-0) a 34-10 lead.
Omar Haugabook, who completed 24-of-34 passes for 195 yards and ran for 64 yards and a touchdown, hit Andrew Davis for a three yard touchdown pass with 6:38 left in the third quarter to make the score 27-10.
Early on, Troy had trailed FIU (0-6, 0-2) by a touchdown before it scored 17 unanswered points on four straight possessions in the second quarter. Haugabook’s four-yard touchdown run gave the Trojans a 10-7 lead with 7:25 in the second quarter.
Leodis McKelvin scored on an 84-yard punt return with 3:32 in the second quarter, which extended the Trojans’ lead to 17-7 and set a Troy record for longest punt return for a touchdown.
Greg Whibbs kicked a 20-yard field goal three seconds before halftime to give Troy a 20-10 lead. He had kicked a 39-yard field goal early in the second quarter that cut Florida International’s lead to 7-3.
Florida International’s quarterback Wayne Younger completed 19-of-40 passes for 248 yards and threw two interceptions and a late touchdown. His nine-yard pass to wide receiver James Rucker with 29 seconds left in the game made the score 34-16.
Younger scored on a four yard run with 2:38 in the first quarter to give FIU a 7-0 lead – its first in a game since facing Lousiana-Lafayette last Nov. 18. Chris Abed’s 39-yard field goal with 1:25 in the second quarter was the Golden Panthers’ other score.
Chris Cook set the FIU record for longest punt twice in the game. He broke the previous mark of 66 yards – set this season against Maryland – with a 68-yard punt in the first quarter and a 71-yard punt in second quarter.
Troy’s defense held FIU to 81 yards rushing. The Trojans had 494 yards of total offense in the game. It was FIU’s 18th straight loss.
