HOUSTON (AP) -Texas Southern hired former player and assistant Johnnie Cole on Friday to take over the struggling program, which is coming off a winless season.
After turning around Lane College, Cole replaces Steve Wilson, who was fired Nov. 8 with two games remaining. Wilson compiled a 4-38 record in parts of three seasons.
Cole was 15-16 in three years at Lane. He was coach of the year in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2006, the school’s first winning season in 12 years. Lane was 8-3 in 2006 and 7-3 in 2007, the first back-to-back winning seasons in 24 years.
Among the players Cole coached at Lane was wide receiver Jacoby Jones, who was taken in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Houston Texans.
