CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -William Richardson threw for 301 yards and one touchdown to lead Coastal Carolina to a 28-21 win Saturday against Winston Salem State.
The Chanticleers (1-1) also got 77 yards on the ground from freshman Eric O’Neal on 17 carries and jumped out to a 12-0 lead before the Rams (1-1) got on the board with a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Monte Purvis just before the end of the half.
Purvis finished with 165 yards rushing and just 11 passing yards. Jed Bines added 123 yards on the ground.
In the third, Coastal went up 18-7 when Tommy Fraser plunged in from one yard out to wrap up a six-play, 44-yard drive. Winston-Salem answered with two long runs by Purvis of 66 yards and 80 yards to give the Rams their first lead of the game at 21-18 with 1:24 to go in the third.
Coastal tied the game on a Justin Durham field goal (28 yards) and another 1-yard run by Fraser to end the scoring with 8:15 left in the game.
