West Virginia Season Odds
MORGANTOWN, WV (TheSpread) – West Virginia has shown signs of being a national title contender, but also shown plenty of signs of why they aren’t. Is 2015 the year the Mountaineers put it all together?
According to oddsmakers at GTBets, West Virginia has been given 250/1 odds to win the College Football Playoffs in this upcoming season. The Mountaineers are also currently listed with odds of +1600 to win the Big 12 Championship.
Holgorsen is entering his fifth season as head coach of West Virginia. After a 10-3 season in his debut season in 2011 as part of the Big East, the Mountaineers moved to the Big 12 Conference. In the three years since that time, West Virginia has went 18-20 overall and 11-16 in conference play. Last season was WVU’s best in the Big 12, going 7-6 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Offense wasn’t an issue for West Virginia last season, as the Mountaineers posted 33.5 points per game behind one of the top passing games in the nation. WVU averaged 317 yards per game in the air, which ranked ninth nationally. The team also averaged 182.8 yards per game on the ground. Defensively, WVU struggled mightily, giving up 27.6 points per game, which ranked 74th in the country. The Mountaineers have Skyler Howard returning at QB. He saw limited action last year, throwing for 829 yards with eight touchdowns. The team also loses its top two receivers.
West Virginia has a pretty reasonable non-conference schedule this season, as it hosts Georgia Southern, Liberty and Maryland. In Big 12 action, WVU hosts Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas and Iowa State. West Virginia is hitting the road to take on Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU, Kansas and Kansas State. With the inexperience at key spots on the offense, it could be tough for WVU to make a real run at the conference title.
