Florida Season Odds
GAINESVILLE, FL (TheSpread) – Will a new head coach finally get the Florida Gators back on track in the college football world? Here is what oddsmakers think.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Florida is currently listed with 66/1 odds to win the College Football Playoffs this upcoming season. The Gators are also getting odds of +2000 to win the SEC Championship, while their over/under total for wins in 2015 has been set at 7.
Following a 6-5 record in 2014, Florida decided to part ways with Will Muschamp as their head coach. The Gators went 28-21 overall and 17-15 in his four seasons with the team, but only had one season with double-digit wins. In steps Jim McElwain, who comes from Colorado State where he went 22-16 overall in three seasons, but improved from four wins in his first year to eight in his second year and then 10 in the 2014 season.
The problem for Florida hasn’t been its defense. The Gators held opponents to just 21.1 points per game last season, which ranked 20th nationally. However, the offense really wasn’t too strong. Though it averaged 30.3 points per game, it was just 106th in passing at 179.9 yards per game. The team does return sophomore quarterback Treon Harris, who split time at the position a year ago. He threw for 1,019 yards and nine touchdowns in 2014 while rushing for 332 yards and three scores. The team also has running back Kelvin Taylor (565 yds) and receiver Demarcus Robinson (53 rec, 810 yds) back to help inflate the offensive numbers.
Florida opens the season with home games against New Mexico State and ECU. It will also face FAU and Florida State at the end of the season. SEC home games include Tennessee, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt with road trips to Kentucky, Missouri, LSU and South Carolina. It also faces Georgia in the annual neutral-site game. Florida could start well, but the meat of the schedule is pretty difficult week-in and week-out. Seven wins could be tough for a first-year coach.
