Pittsburgh Season Odds

Pittsburgh has slowly worked its way into a 10-win football program, but can Dave Wannstedt lead the Panthers to a Big East Championship?

Bet College Football Future Odds

Wannstedt is 35-26 in his career with Pitt. He struggled in his first three seasons, but has went 9-4 and 10-3 in his last two seasons respectively. The Panthers lost a classic to

Cincinnati
last year which would have given it the Big East title, but this year, the title may be the Panthers to lose.

On offense, Pitt has five starters back and none are bigger that sophomore sensation Dion Lewis. Lewis became a Heisman contender as a freshman after rushing for 1,799 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2009. Lewis will be the focal point of the offense, but his offensive line is replacing the middle starters this year.

Pitt also loses Bill Stull as quarterback. Stull did a nice job of managing games with just eight interceptions to 21 touchdowns in 2009. Tino Sunseri is expected to start in 2010 as he saw limited action last season.

Leading receiver Jon Baldwin is also back after earning First Teal All-Big East honors in 2009.
Baldwin caught 57 passes for 1,111 yards and eight touchdowns.

On defense, Pitt has six starters back, led by All-Big East defensive end Greg Romeus, who had 43 tackles and eight sacks in 2009. Pitt also brings back both safeties and leading tackle Max Gruder at strong side linebacker. Gruder had 91 tackles and four tackles for loss in 2009.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com currently list

Pittsburgh
as 40/1 to win the 2011 BCS National Championship. The Panthers are also given 2/1 odds to win the Big East.

Pitt opens up with a tough road game at

Utah
on Sept. 2 and that could indicate where the Panthers stand in the BCS picture. A big non-conference win combined with a run of the table in the Big East could put the Panthers in title contention. Pitt also faces Notre Dame and
Miami in non-conference play and its toughest conference road games are at
Cincinnati and

Connecticut
. While Pitt has the top player in the conference in Lewis, Wannstedt just hasn’t shown he has what it takes to win the big games. While Pitt could find a way to win the depleted Big East, don’t look for it to contend for the BCS National title.
