The Cincinnati Bearcats had an undefeated regular season in 2010, but can they do it again under new head coach Butch Jones?

Jones is taking over

Cincinnati
for Brian Kelly, who left the Bearcats to coach at Notre Dame. It is the second time in his career that Jones has followed Kelly to a school, as he did so also at
Central Michigan.

Despite the coaching change, Jones brings a similar offensive style to

Cincinnati
and he has to be foaming at the mouth to use quarterback Zach Collaros. Collaros filled in for Tony Pike during a short stint in 2009 and he threw for 1,434 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for 344 yards and four scores in four starts. The junior will be the focal point of the offense as the Bearcats lose top receiver Mardy Gilyard.

Along with Collaros,

Cincinnati
brings back junior running back Isiah Pead who totaled 806 yards and nine scores on the ground. Armon Binns is also back at wide receiver after catching 11 touchdown passes in 2009.

Defensively,

Cincinnati
brings back five starters from a defense that allowed 23 points per-game. Linebacker J.K. Schaffer will have to lead the way. He had 100 tackles and three interceptions in 2009 to earn Second Team All-Big East honors while junior defensive tackle Derek Wolfe is the leading returning sack man for

Cincinnati
with five.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com currently list the Bearcats as 80/1 long shots to win the 2011 BCS National Championship. They’re also 6/1 to win the Big East Conference.

The key for the Bearcats this season will be how much the coaching change affects the team. There is always a learning curve when a new system is put in, but it may likely hurt the defense more than the offense.

Cincinnati
is young on defense in a conference that has a lot of explosive offensive plays. The Bearcats should be able to score points, but it will be a matter of how many they have to score.

The schedule is not favorable either in 2010.
Cincinnati has road trips to
Fresno
State
and
West Virginia while hosting

Oklahoma
at Paul Brown Stadium. While a Big East title gets the Bearcats a BCS bowl bid, you can’t expect them to run the table like they did last season.

2010 Over/Under Win Total: 8

2011 BCS Championship Odds:

Cincinnati
Bearcats 80/1

Odds to win the Big East: Cincinnati Bearcats 6/1
