Bears edged by Oklahoma
Baylor wasn’t far from a possible playoff appearance. The Bears suffered a 30-23 OT loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship and saw the Sooners go on to face LSU in the semifinals. Baylor only suffered two losses all season and both were to Oklahoma by single digits. The Bears are 11-2 on the season, 9-4 against the spread and 7-6 with the under.
Baylor has been steady on both sides of the ball this year. The offense is putting up 35.2 points and 431.2 yards per game, while the defense is allowing just 19.3 points and 358.9 yards per contest. Charlie Brewer is leading the Baylor offense with 2,950 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. He also has rushed for 337 yards and 10 scores. Denzel Mims has been his top receiver with 61 catches for 945 yards and 11 touchdowns while John Lovett is the leading rusher with 637 yards and five scores. James Lynch is leading the defense with 39 tackles and 12.5 sacks.
Bulldogs beat down by LSU
Georgia saw its national title hopes come to an end in a 37-10 loss to LSU in the SEC Championship Game earlier in December. The Bulldogs are 11-2 on the season, 7-6 against the spread and 10-3 with the under.
The Bulldogs have been one of the top defenses in the nation all season. They are allowing just 12.5 points and 274.5 yards per game this year. Their offense has been okay, but nothing special. Georgia averages 31.2 points and 411.1 yards per game. The Bulldogs have some players electing not to play in this bowl game, which could impact them on both sides of the ball. All-American lineman Andrew Thomas and All-American DB J.R. Reed are among the players not playing. Jake Fromm will play and he has thrown for 2,610 yards and 22 touchdowns to lead the offense. D’Andre Swift has rushed for 1,216 yards and seven scores, while George Pickens is the leading receiver with 37 catches for 552 yards and seven touchdowns.
College Football Betting Trends
Baylor
The Bears are 4-1 with the over in their last five bowl games and 23-9 with the over in their last 32 non-conference games.
Georgia
The Bulldogs have hit the under in seven of their last eight games overall and in four of their last five bowl games.
Prediction:
The total is set very low for this game and, on paper, it seems like the under could be hit. The big question for this game is how motivated is Georgia? The Bulldogs seem to have a lot of players not interested in this game and perhaps their on-field performance will be lackluster. I have to assume the best, but I am concerned. At their best, Georgia is a defense that has dominated all season. They held LSU to just 37, which is looking more impressive with each LSU game. Baylor is likely to really struggle to match Georgia’s physicality. The Bears have a defense that can give Georgia problems as well. The Bulldogs haven’t really been an explosive offense this year and they have relied heavily on their defense all season. Look for more of the same on Wednesday, which should allow this low total to go under.
Sugar Bowl Prediction: Baylor/Georgia Under 41.5
