Washington vs. Washington State Picks: Will Apple Cup be high-scoring?

Will a shootout break out in this year's Apple Cup between Washington and Washington State this Friday at 3:30PM ET?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Cougars are now 6.5-point home underdogs versus the Huskies after opening as a 6-point dog. As for the total, the number opened at 64 and has been bet up to 64.5 at the majority of online and Vegas sports books.

The Huskies rebounded from their first loss of the season (26-13 to USC) to crush Arizona State 44-18 last Saturday night. Despite the easy win, Washington failed to cover the 27-point spread and has now failed to cover in four of its last five games. The only game in which Washington covered during that span was a 66-27 win over Cal as a 19-point road favorite in Berkeley.

The Cougars lost for the first time since early September, falling 38-24 on the road to Colorado last Saturday as a 6-point underdog. It was the first time they failed to cover in the past three weeks and they are now 8-3 overall and 6-5 against the spread. Washington State has been a pretty decent home bet this season, as the Cougars have covered in four of their six games at Martin Stadium in Pullman.

OUR PREDICTION: Points shouldn't be an issue on Friday. The over is a perfect 6-0 in the Huskies' last six road games, is 10-2 in their last 12 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game, and is 11-3 in their last 14 games overall. On the other side, the over is 4-1 in the Cougars' lat five games and has cashed in six of their last eight home games versus a team with a winning road record. Both of these teams play decent defense (Washington better than Washington State), but the Huskies are averaging 44.7 points per game this season while the Cougars are averaging 42.5 per contest. Even if those averages come down a bit, the combined score should go over the total.
