Iowa drops two straight
The Iowa Hawkeyes started the year at 4-0, but have lost to Michigan and Penn State over the last two weeks by a combined 12 points. Iowa is now 4-2 on the season, 1-2 in the Big Ten, 2-4 against the spread and 4-1-1 with the under.
Iowa has had one of the top defenses in the nation this year, giving up just 10.2 points and 261.5 yards per game. Offensively, Iowa is putting up 24.8 points and 412.8 yards per contest. Nate Stanley has thrown for 1,511 yards and nine touchdowns to lead the offense while Ihmir Smith-Marsette is the leading receiver with 24 catches for 386 yards and three touchdowns. Mekhi Sargent is the leading rusher with 329 yards and two scores.
Purdue trying to heat up
Purdue ended a three-game losing streak last weekend with a 40-14 win over Maryland at home. The Boilermakers are now 2-4 on the year, 1-2 in the Big Ten, 3-3 against the spread and 4-2 with the over.
The Boilermakers are struggling on defense this year, allowing 29.8 points and 444.5 yards per game. Offensively, Purdue has been able to put up 27.3 points and 388.5 yards per outing. The team has been without Elijah Sindelar at QB due to a collarbone injury. Jack Plummer has replaced him and thrown for 965 yards and seven touchdowns this year. Explosive receiver Rondale Moore has also been out with an injury, leaving Purdue shorthanded at the position. David Bell is the leading receiver with 26 catches for 438 yards while King Doerue is the leading rusher with just 226 yards and three scores.
College Football Betting Trends
The Hawkeyes are 4-0-1 with the over in their last five games against a losing team and 4-1-1 with the over in their last six games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous outing.
The Boilermakers are 11-3 with the under in their last 14 road games and 6-2 with the under in their last eight games in October.
These two have actually hit the over in three of their last four meetings, but I think the under will hit today. Iowa has been very strong on defense and Purdue just doesn’t have the playmakers to move the ball on the road against the Hawkeyes. Iowa also isn’t an overwhelming offense, so I expect Purdue will force Iowa to have to put together sustainable drives to score. While I am comfortable with Iowa winning and covering, I expect a low score as I don’t think Purdue will do much offensively.
College Football Week 8 Prediction: Purdue/Iowa Under 48.5
