Public Betting Trends
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetNow.eu, the Tigers are 6.5-point favorites to beat the Bulldogs. The total, meanwhile, sits at 44.5 points. As of this writing, 68% of the public betting tickets wagered on this matchup are on the Tigers.
Mississippi State Bulldogs
Mississippi State senior QB Nick Fitzgerald rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 23-9 win over No. 8 Auburn. Fitzgerald also completed 9-of-17 for 69 passing yards with one interception, but that’s irrelevant since he nearly rushed for 200 yards with a pair of rushing touchdowns. The senior broke the SEC career record for most rushing yards by a quarterback that was formerly held by a guy named Tim Tebow. Fitzgerald (6’3/235) won’t ever be a consistent passer, but his rushing ability is an unique trait and it can be enough for Mississippi State to beat high quality teams like Auburn. The Bulldogs get another tough matchup after this week’s bye when they take on the LSU Tigers on October 20th.
LSU Tigers
LSU redshirt junior QB Joe Burrow completed 15-of-30 passes for 200 yards in a 36-16 upset win over Georgia on Saturday. And he even had three big plays on the ground, completing one-yard touchdown pushes in the second and fourth quarters and icing the game with a 59-yard gallop late in the fourth quarter. The Ohio State transfer was lights out in the first half as LSU jumped out to a 16-0 lead. Georgia got within 10, in the late third/early fourth quarter, but no closer. Off this dominant performance, LSU welcomes Mississippi State to town next week.
Betting Trends
Mississippi State
The under is 8-2 in the Bulldogs’ last 10 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
LSU
The over is 4-0 in the Tigers’ last four games overall and 4-1 in their last five home games.
Prediction
I’m going to take a shot with the over here despite LSU’s stout defense and despite Mississippi State’s inconsistencies on offense. The over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings between these two teams in Baton Rouge and with the total sitting in the mid-40s, I like taking the risk again on the over. The over is 5-2 in the Tigers’ last seven games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game and is 4-1 in their last five home games versus an opponent with a winning road record.
