Vanderbilt Commodores
Vanderbilt senior QB Kyle Shurmur completed just 22-of-29 passes for 297 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 31-27 win over Tennessee State. Despite the Commodores entering this game as 28.5-point home favorites, they barely squeaked out a win. They were actually losing at one point in the fourth quarter before a 68-yard strike to Kalija Lipscomb from Shurmur. Shurmur’s had an up-and-down season with flashes of promise and occasional struggles. This isn’t the type of performance you want out of your starting quarterback heading into the heart of their SEC schedule and No. 2 Georgia up next. Shurmur could have a rough one next week against Georgia’s elite defense.
Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia sophomore QB Jake Fromm completed 16-of-22 passes for 185 scoreless yards in Saturday’s 38-12 win over Tennessee. Today was actually Fromm’s first career game without a passing touchdown. Tennessee did a great job of eliminating big plays — there was only one 25+ yard play by Georgia — but Fromm was able to steadily move the ball down the field, which allowed the Bulldog backs to finish off drives. Through five games, Fromm owns a 9/1 TD/INT ratio while averaging 184.4 passing yards per game. The sophomore quarterback hasn’t needed to fill the stat sheet with the 5-0 Georgia Bulldogs playing great defense. Fromm and freshman Justin Fields — who scored two times on the ground but only threw two passes today — play Vanderbilt next Saturday.

Prediction
Every week and matchup is different but if Vandy couldn’t move the ball against Tennessee State last week how are the Commodores supposed to score versus Georgia? The Bulldogs will score their fair amount of points on Saturday night but I don’t see how Vanderbilt adds more than 14-17 points of their own (and that might be too generous). Plus, Vandy is holding opponents to 20.6 points per game, so its strength team-wise is defense. I like the under.
