Big 12 Conference Predictions
The Oklahoma Sooners have won the last four Big 12 Conference championships. Oddsmakers think the Sooners are on a fast track to another title in 2019. Will it happen?
According to oddsmakers, Oklahoma is the clear favorite to win the title, as the Sooners have -175 odds. Other short odds to win are Texas (+400), Iowa State (+800) and Baylor (+1200).
The Sooners are 12-time conference champs and they come into this season as the preseason favorite. Oklahoma has 12 starters back from this year’s team. Lincoln Riley loses another Heisman winner at QB, but gets Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts to run the offense this year.
The Longhorns were 7-2 in the league last year and lost to Oklahoma in the title game in 2018. Texas has won the Big 12 three times, last doing so in 2009. Texas has 10 starters back this year, with just three returning on defense. Sam Ehlinger is back at QB, but Texas is going to have some struggles with such inexperience.
Iowa State has been competitive in the league in recent years, going 6-3 in the Big 12 last season. The Cyclones bring back 15 starters this year, including quarterback Brock Purdy, who is just a sophomore. This could be Iowa State’s best team yet.
Baylor struggled to a 4-5 record in the Big 12 last year and the Bears have 16 starters back this year to help bolster their chances. Of the starters back, Charlie Brewers leads the way. The junior QB led Baylor to 290 passing yards per game last season.
It looked as if Texas had a shot to top Oklahoma last season, but nobody in the Big 12 was able to score at the crazy pace the Sooners were. This year, that shouldn’t take a big hit with Hurts running the show. I expect a lot of scoring this year with an improved effort on defense. Texas lost a lot and that’s going to make it hard for the Longhorns to compete with Oklahoma and I don’t see the likes of Iowa State and Baylor being ready to make a big jump up in performance.
Big 12 Conference Championship Prediction: Oklahoma -175
