Baylor Season Odds
WACO, TX (TheSpread) – Baylor has emerged as one of the top teams in the country over the past few seasons. Can the Bears put together the formula to make a run at a national title?
According to oddsmakers at GTBets, Baylor is currently listed with 20/1 odds to win the College Football Playoffs this upcoming season. The Bears are getting odds of +275 to win the Big 12 Conference this year, while their over/under total for wins has been set at 10.
Art Briles is entering his eighth season as head coach. He is 55-34 in his career with a 33-27 Big 12 record. Baylor has gone 11-2 the last two years with an 8-1 record in the Big 12, winning the conference title both seasons. Despite that, Baylor has lost in the bowl game the last two years which has hurt its national reputation a hair.
Baylor had the top scoring offense in the nation last season, averaging 48.2 points and 581.4 yards per game. The defense held opponents to 25.5 points per contest. The team has to replace some key parts, mainly Bryce Petty at QB. Petty had 3,855 yards with 29 TDs last season. Seth Russell could be the man. He threw for 804 yards in limited time in 2014 and is coming off a strong showing at the Manning Academy. Russell has stars to work with in receivers Corey Coleman and KD Cannon, who each have over 1,000 receiving yards in 2014. The team also returns running back Shock Linwood, who rushed for 1,252 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2014.
Baylor opens the year at SMU and then it hosts Lamar and Rice in non-conference games. The Bears then face Texas Tech at AT&T Stadium. The Bears will have Big 12 games at Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and TCU. Home conference games are with West Virginia, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas. Baylor should have an offense that can compete with anyone as long as Russell pans out. The key will be if its defense can make enough stops. Winning at TCU will be a big challenge, but Baylor gets to face most of their top competition at home.
