Phoenix down Tigers in OT

Green Bay edged Texas Southern 87-86 in overtime Tuesday night to advance to the CIT championship game. The Phoenix (21-16) were outscored 44-40 in the second half, but bounced back to outscore the Tigers 11-10 in the overtime session. Green Bay shot 38-of-70 from the field, 8-of-25 from 3-point range plus 3-of-11 at the free throw line. Sandy Cohen III paced the Phoenix with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting plus 3-of-7 at the charity stripe. He also accounted for eight rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots. Trevian Bell tallied 21 points, five boards, three blocks and two dimes off the bench. Shanquan Hemphill added 12 points, six caroms and five assists.

Thundering Herd edge Pirates

Marshall held on for an 80-78 victory over Hampton Tuesday night in the CIT semifinals to improve to 22-14 on the season. The Thundering Herd led 51-38 at halftime before fending off a Pirates second-half rally attempt. Marshall shot 26-of-63 from the floor, 13-of-32 from 3-point distance plus 15-of-22 at the free throw line. Jon Elmore led the Thundering Herd with 28 points on 9-of-22 shooting including 7-of-13 from 3-point range plus 3-of-4 at the free throw line. He also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists. C.J. Burks contributed 17 points and four assists. Jannson Williams added 12 points, nine boards and three blocked shots.

Prediction:

Green Bay has the best win in this tournament when it down a talented East Tennessee State team 101-94 on the road in its opener. The Phoenix will try to close out the tournament with another big road won in tonight's title game, which features a pair of fast-paced teams as that is seemingly a focal point of the CIT. The Thundering Herd are strong at both taking care of the basketball and forcing turnovers, but Green Bay has been pretty decent this season as a top-100 team in offensive turnover ratio. As long as the Phoenix doesn't give away the basketball with frequency, I like their chances to hang right in there until the end and perhaps even steal a championship victory.
