Collins wins it for Bulls

David Collins hit the game-winning runner for South Florida with 1.6 seconds remaining Monday night to lead his squad to a 63-61 home victory over DePaul in Game 1 of the CBI championship series. The Bulls (23-13) were outscored 36-32 in the second half but managed to hang on at the end. South Florida shot 22-of-52 from the floor, 10-of-22 from 3-point distance plus 9-of-17 at the free throw line. Collins paced the Bulls with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting including 4-of-7 from 3-point range plus 3-of-7 at the free throw line. He also accounted for six assists and three rebounds. LaQuincy Rideau contributed 15 points, four boards and two assists. Alexis Yetna tallied 10 points, eight caroms and two blocked shots.

Cain leads Blue Demons in defeat

Eli Cain scored 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting including 4-of-5 from 3-point distance plus 3-of-4 at the charity stripe in the 63-61 loss to DePaul Monday night. He also notched three rebounds and three assists. The Blue Demons (18-16) trailed 31-25 at halftime before rallying after the break, but ultimately fell short. DePaul shot 20-of-52 from the field, 6-of-15 from 3-point range plus 15-of-21 at the free throw line. Max Strus accounted for 17 points and five boards in the defeat. Femi Olujobi added 11 points and four boards.

Prediction:

This spread seems to have been set with the expectation that the championship series will be evened at a game apiece in relatively smooth fashion. But these two squads are very evenly matched and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see another contest go right down to the wire. While I think DePaul has a good shot to make the series 1-1, this might be its turn for a game-winner at the end which would allow South Florida to cover again.
