Boilermakers prevail in OT
Purdue advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2000 Thursday night as it blew an 18-point lead before earning a 99-94 overtime win over Tennessee. The Boilermakers (26-9) were outscored 54-42 in the second half, but bounced back by outscoring the Volunteers 17-12 in OT. Purdue shot 34-of-63 from the field, 15-of-31 from 3-point distance plus 16-of-33 at the free throw line. Carsen Edwards paced the Boilermakers with 29 points on 8-of-22 shooting including 5-of-14 from 3-point land plus 8-of-14 at the charity stripe. He also notched four rebounds and three assists. Ryan Cline tallied 27 points, four dimes and two boards. Matt Haarms accounted for 11 points, six caroms, three blocked shots and two assists. Nojel Eastern added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Cavs slip past Ducks
Virginia gutted out a 53-49 victory over Oregon Thursday night to advance to the Elite Eight with a 32-3 record. The Cavaliers led 30-22 at halftime and withstood a second-half comeback attempt by the Ducks. Ty Jerome led Virginia with 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting including 3-of-8 from 3-point distance. He also notched six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Kihei Clark accounted for 12 points, six dimes and four boards. De’Andre Hunter registered 11 points and four rebounds. Kyle Guy added 10 points and four boards. Virginia shot 20-of-53 from the floor, 9-of-33 from 3-point range plus 4-of-5 at the free throw line.
College Basketball Betting Trends
Purdue
The Boilermakers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven Saturday games. Purdue is 4-1 ATS in its last five games overall.
Virginia
The Cavaliers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games versus the Big Ten. Virginia is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games overall.
Prediction:
Virginia is elite both offensively and defensively, ranking third nationally in both categories in terms of adjusted efficiency. The Boilermakers can hold their own offensively, but I don’t see their defense slowing up the Cavs enough to hang in there for 40 minutes. With Virginia also being so good on the defensive end, the stops will still begin to accumulate even with Purdue having the talent and IQ on the offensive end. Purdue is also coming off a grueling and emotional overtime win only two nights ago. I don’t see the same kind of result for the underdogs here.
