Boise State’s Free-Throw Shooting is Concerning

Boise State opened at -10 at BetOnline and this sportsbook set the total at 139 in their NCAA Basketball odds board. Should we back the road team catching so many points or hammer this total?

Nevada (12-15 SU, 8-18 ATS) has lost their last two games, including Saturday’s 74-61 setback in a road clash with Wyoming. Desmond Cambridge Jr.  and Grant Sherfield led the way with 12 points each and Warren Washington and Kenan Blackshear added 11 points apiece, but they didn’t much from the rest of the team and their reserves combined for just nine points. Missing 16 3-pointers didn’t help at all, you won’t win many games going just 6-for-22 from beyond the arc (27.3 percent) and Nevada turned the ball over 14 times. They really need to clean this up ahead of Tuesday.

Boise State (23-6 SU, 15-13 ATS) has won four straight games, including a convincing 86-76 road victory against UNLV last Saturday. Marcus Shaver Jr. and Abu Kigad exploded for a combined 50 points, but the rest of their teammates didn’t contribute much, and Boise State won by 10 points despite going just 13-for-25 (52.0 percent) from the free-throw line. They will need more players to step up and better shooting at the charity stripe to cover this number against Nevada. Missing 12 free-throws again could be costly.

Boise State ranks just 257th in the nation, averaging 69.1 points per game and they rely too much on Shaver and Kigad. Nevada’s defense is not particularly strong, and they need to play a perfect game at both ends of the floor to keep it competitive, which easier said than done but I’m not a fan of laying so many points with a Boise State team that shoot just 63.8 percent from the free-throw line.

This will be the second game that Grant Sherfield, Desmond Cambridge Jr., and Warren Washington will be in Nevada’s starting five since January 25 and they will have a better showing than in the visit to Wyoming. Nevada won’t miss 16 3-point shots again!
