BALTIMORE (AP) -Darryl Proctor scored 20 points and Jay Greene and Chauncey Gilliam each had 17 to lead Maryland-Baltimore County past Stevenson 91-54 in the season opener Saturday for both teams.
UMBC, the reigning American East champions, went on a 21-7 run to start the game. Matt Spadafora scored 11 points and Justin Fry added 10 for the Retrievers, who had little trouble handling Stevenson’s man-to-man defense.
Greg Woody and Chaise Lancaster each scored 12 points for the NCAA Division III Mustangs, who made 39.6 percent of their shots (21-of-53). UMBC, which shot 57.4 percent from the field (39-of-68), led by double digits for most of the game.
The Retrievers, who have won 16 of their past 17 home games, also out rebounded Stevenson 40-27.
Stevenson had 16 turnovers.
