MILWAUKEE (AP) -Tim Flowers scored 18 points and Torre Johnson added 16 to lead Wisconsin-Milwaukee to a 78-53 victory over Division II Upper Iowa on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Anthony Hill added 10 points for the Panthers and Johnson hauled down 10 rebounds.
Milwaukee won without senior guard Avery Smith, who was dismissed from the team Wednesday for unspecified violations of team rules. He was Milwaukee’s leading scorer last season with 15.5 points per game and had been expected to be a major contributor this season.
The Peacocks were led by A.J. Adkins with 11 points.
Upper Iowa’s Alex Kramer scored the first basket of the second half to cut Milwaukee’s 17-point halftime advantage to 36-21. But Flowers powered inside for two straight baskets to boost the Panther lead to 40-21 and the Peacocks never got that close again.
An 11-0 run helped Milwaukee to a 36-19 halftime lead.
The Peacocks started strong, scoring the first five points of the game and recapturing the lead at 10-9 on a 3-pointer by Marcus Uhlenhopp. But Hill made a pair of free throws with 14:01 left that put the Panthers up for good in the game at 11-10 and ignited the decisive run.
Hill added two more free throws in the scoring surge to boost Milwaukee’s lead to 20-10.
