KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -The Royals traded right-hander Billy Buckner to the Arizona Diamondbacks for switch-hitting infielder Alberto Callaspo on Friday.
The 24-year-old Callaspo hit .215 with eight doubles and seven RBIs in 56 games for Arizona this year. He appeared mostly as a pinch hitter and split the season between the Diamondbacks and Triple-A Tucson. In the Pacific Coast League, he batted .341 with five home runs, 15 doubles and 30 RBIs.
“The addition of Alberto continues to increase the versatility on our team,” Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore said. “He is a young, tremendously skilled player with a great eye at the plate and very solid defensive skills at three infield positions.”
Buckner pitched 34 innings for the Royals this year and was 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA.
