PHILADELPHIA (AP) -The Pittsburgh Pirates sent John Van Benschoten to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, a day after the right-hander lost his fifth straight decision.
A former first-round pick, Van Benschoten is 0-5 with a 9.76 ERA in seven starts this year. Van Benschoten allowed seven runs and six hits in 2 1-3 innings in an 8-1 loss to the Phillies on Friday. He didn’t pitch out of the third inning in his last three starts.
The Pirates plan to make a roster move Sunday to replace Van Benschoten. Tony Armas Jr. will take his spot in the rotation and start Wednesday night against St. Louis.
