PHILADELPHIA (AP) -The Philadelphia Phillies signed left-hander Joe Savery, their first-round draft pick, and assigned him to Williamsport of the New York-Penn League.
Savery agreed Wednesday night to a contract that includes a $1.3 million signing bonus. He’ll join the Crosscutters on a road trip in Massachusetts on Friday.
Savery was the 19th overall selection in last month’s draft out of Rice. He went 11-1 with a 2.99 ERA in his junior year for the Owls, who advanced to the College World Series and finished third last season. He also played first base and hit a team-best .356 with 60 RBIs.
The Phillies scheduled a news conference with Savery for Friday afternoon.
