NEW YORK (AP) Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon defended the team’s offseason spending, saying more moves are likely before opening day and during the season.
New York started last season with a $157 million payroll for its 40-man roster. The Mets cut it to $149 million as the team faded from contention following a series of injuries that caused it to hire a new director of performance and sports science from the U.S. Army, where he had worked in special operations.
Wilpon says ”being top five in payroll, I don’t think that won us a World Series” and adds ”we’re set out to make the playoffs and do well” and ”not try and be at the top five in payroll.”
Two years after reaching the World Series, New York went 70-92 for its worst record since 2009. Wilpon says ”I understand the fan base’s frustration and we have the same frustration.”
Jim Cavallini, whose hiring was announced Tuesday, had been director of performance for the Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
