San Francisco Giants Fantasy Spin
Buster Posey went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead three-run homer — his first long ball of the season — to lift the Giants to a 3-2 win over the Pirates on Sunday. Posey walloped a 409-foot drive to center field off Pirates starter Chris Archer to put the Giants ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning. He also drew a walk in the first and doubled in the third to record his fourth multi-hit effort of the young campaign. The 32-year-old veteran backstop has gotten off to a slow start in his return from season-ending hip surgery last August. His trademark plate discipline and contact skills have remained intact, but he’s struggled to hit for power this month. He’s shown some signs of life at the plate recently and the two-hit performance raises his triple-slash line to .227/.311/.364 with four runs scored and five RBI in 74 plate appearances. Given the lack of quality options at the catcher position, he remains a must-own fantasy option in all formats.
Toronto Blue Jays Fantasy Spin
Justin Smoak had a monster day at the dish in Sunday’s 5-4 victory over the Athletics, going 4-for-5 with a homer and two RBI. Smoak clubbed a two-run homer off of J.B. Wendelken in the seventh inning, increasing the Blue Jays’ lead to 5-1. While it seemed like only insurance at the time, it proved to be the difference in the ballgame. With the four-hit effort, Smoak is now slashing a robust .313/.439/.582 with five long balls and 17 RBI.
MLB Betting Trends
San Francisco
The Giants are 2-9 in Jeff Samardzija’s last 11 starts and are winless in his last six road outings.
Toronto
The Blue Jays are 8-3 in their last 11 games versus the Giants and 4-1 in their last five home games against San Francisco.
Prediction:
The Rays are the only team thus far to hit Samardzija hard this year. While it’s risky to trust that Samardzija is on the verge of a bounce back season, he has pitched well thus far and there are plenty of strikeouts in Toronto’s lineup. In fact, the current Blue Jays have faced Samardzija in 43 at bats and are only hitting .209 against him with a home run and three runs scored. Meanwhile, Thornton has given up nine runs in his last two starts but the Giants own one of the worst offenses in baseball. Tonight is a prime rebound spot for Thornton.
The Pick: Giants/Blue Jays UNDER 8.5
