Padres’ Strahm starts “bullpen” game for Padres
Matt Strahm surrendered two hits and one run over 2 1/3 innings Wednesday in the Padres’ win over the Braves. The left-hander struck out two and didn’t walk anyone while throwing 21 of his 30 pitches for strikes. The only run Strahm allowed came in the first inning on a solo blast by Freddie Freeman. San Diego treated this as a bullpen game, using five pitchers in Wednesday’s victory. Strahm can give the Padres some length—this was his fifth outing of at least two innings this year—but he’s not someone fantasy owners should be investing in.
Cardinals’ Mikolas works seven strong innings vs. Marlins
Miles Mikolas limited the Marlins to an unearned run and three hits over seven innings to earn a win Thursday. Mikolas’ line in 12 starts this year looks no different from what he was doing in Japan; he’s 7-1 with a 2.27 ERA. He’s walked a total of nine batters in 79 1/3 innings. Up next for the 29-year-old right-hander is another favorable matchup at home against the Padres.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
Following their loss last night, the Padres are 5-13 in their last 18 games versus the Cardinals and are 16-46 in their last 62 games played at Busch Stadium.
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 6-1 in Mikolas’ last seven starts and are 4-1 in his last five home outings.
Prediction:
Mikolas has been fantastic and benefits from facing a light-hitting Padres lineup playing in a pitcher-friendly ballpark tonight in St. Louis. Plus, even though it’s a bullpen game for San Diego, the Cardinals haven’t exactly been tearing the cover off the ball as a team lately. The under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings between these two teams and is 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings played at Busch Stadium.
The Pick: Padres/Cardinals under 8.5
