Yankees’ Tanaka allows three solo home runs in last start
Masahiro Tanaka yielded four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in Saturday’s win over the Orioles. Once more, Tanaka had issue with the home run ball, coughing up three solo shots on the evening. Adam Jones (first inning), Joey Ricard (third inning) and Manny Machado (sixth inning) all cracked homers off the right-hander.
In just 12 starts, he’s already allowed 15 home runs. Even beyond the long ball, it’s been a bumpy road of late, with at least three runs scoring against him in five of his last six starts. While none of those outings saw him give up more than four runs, they’ve kept his season-long numbers in something of a pedestrian standstill. Tanaka will carry a 4.79 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 65/18 K/BB ratio (67 2/3 innings) into his next scheduled outing, a crosstown road date with the Mets.
Mets’ deGrom strikes out 13 in 14-inning loss vs. Cubs
Jacob deGrom struck out 13 while tossing seven shutout frames and taking a no-decision in Saturday’s 7-1, 14-inning loss to the Cubs. Brilliant start from deGrom, but alas, Mike Montgomery was up for the pitcher’s duel and prevented him from picking up a decision. He certainly pitched well enough to earn a win. The contest would ultimately hit extra innings knotted at 1-1 before the Cubs eventually came away with victory in the 14th stanza.
Looping back to deGrom, Saturday’s outing marked his fourth start (out of 12 total) in which he’s punched out double-digit batters. On the whole, he has pitched to a scintillating 1.49 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 98/21 K/BB ratio over the course of 72 1/3 innings. Pity that he doesn’t have a more supportive team around him or his 4-0 record would look considerably plumper. Up next on the docket, hosting duties against the rival Yankees.
MLB Betting Trends
Yankees
The Yankees are 6-0 in Tanaka’s last six road starts and are 4-0 in his last four outings coming off five days of rest.
Mets
The Mets are 2-9 in deGrom’s last 11 home starts and have dropped five of his last six outings overall.
Prediction:
The Mets find new ways to lose when deGrom pitches brilliant so taking the Yankees tonight is probably a safe bet. That said, the Mets don’t swing the sticks very well and the Yankees have been inconsistent offensively of late. With deGrom on the hill and Tanaka facing the Mets, I see this game falling under the total tonight. Speaking of which, the under is 7-1 in deGrom’s last eight starts and is 4-1 in the Yankees’ last five interleague road games when facing a right-handeder.
The Pick: Yankees/Mets under 7
