Reds trying to sign Cueto to extension
CINCINNATI, OH (The Spread) – Based on a recent report, the Cincinnati Reds are still attempting to sign pitcher Johnny Cueto to a long-term extension.
Via the Boston Globe, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty indicated that the club is trying to sign Cueto to a long-term contract with the 29-year-old entering the final year of his current deal. Cueto has already made it known that he will not negotiate during the season.
If the two sides cannot come to an agreement by the start of the regular season, don’t be surprised if Jocketty winds up trying to trade Cueto at the deadline. If the Reds wait until the season is over and make a qualifying offer to Cueto, they would receive a draft pick as compensation if he signs elsewhere. But they would likely receive better compensation at the deadline if they were to trade him in July, assuming he doesn’t have a terrible first half.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Reds are 66/1 to win the 2015 World Series and are 28/1 to take home this year’s NL Pennant.
